My notebook has no structure. Some pages have sketches. Some have a sentence from a conversation, a book title, or a list that makes very little sense a week later.

That lack of structure is what makes it useful. It’s a place where an idea can exist before it needs to become anything.

Make it easy to begin

A notebook that feels precious can become a notebook you never use. I choose something simple and write on the first page immediately. The imperfect first mark gives every later mark permission to exist.

I don’t try to write every day. I just try to keep it nearby when something catches my attention.

Look back occasionally

Every few weeks, I flip through the pages. Most notes don’t need a next step. A few connect with something I’m working on, and a few remind me of something I’d forgotten.

It’s less an archive of good ideas and more a record of paying attention. For now, that feels like enough.

Thanks for reading.
